More Than Trucks and Fun: Apex Lions Help Protect Sight at Apex Night Out

By | October 6, 2026

Sometimes, making a difference starts with something as simple as a free vision screening.
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, families gathered at the Apex Town Campus for Apex Night Out featuring Touch-A-Truck. The popular community event brought together residents, first responders, local organizations, and plenty of fascinating vehicles for an evening of fun, discovery, and community connections.

Among the activities, members of the Apex Lions Club were doing something a little different. We were helping our neighbors take an important step toward protecting their eyesight. Throughout the evening, Apex Lions volunteers offered free vision screenings to event attendees.
In all, 27 people received screenings, and four were referred for additional evaluation by an eye care professional.

Vision problems are not always obvious. Someone may have difficulty seeing clearly without realizing it, especially when changes happen gradually. For children, undetected vision problems can affect learning and development. For adults, identifying potential vision concerns can be an important step toward maintaining eye health. A vision screening is not a complete eye examination, and a referral does not necessarily mean someone has an eye condition. But it can identify signs that deserve a closer look. Those four referrals represent four opportunities for people to seek professional evaluation and potentially address a vision problem before it becomes more serious. That is exactly why the Lions make vision screening a priority.

For the Apex Lions Club, vision care is much more than an occasional community project. It is a central part of who we are. Our club has been serving the Apex community since 1937, and helping people protect and improve their sight remains one of our most important missions. Through the Lions KidSight program and other local initiatives, we work to make vision screenings more accessible. Our club owns vision screening equipment and regularly provides free screenings at community events and other locations.

But our service goes beyond vision screenings. Apex Lions also support people in need of vision assistance, collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids for recycling, assist local charitable organizations, and participate in community and youth service projects. Our motto is simple: We Serve. At Apex Night Out, that mission was on full display. Several of our members were on hand to greet visitors, answer questions, explain what Lions do, and share ways people can get involved in serving our community. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet neighbors who were curious about the Lions and introduce them to the many ways our club works to make Apex a better place to live.

We would love to expand the reach of our free vision screening efforts throughout the Apex area. If you are involved with a preschool, school, homeschool group, church, or other community organization, we would welcome the opportunity to explore ways to bring vision screenings to the people you serve.

And if you have ever wondered what being a Lion is all about, we invite you to get to know us. You do not need special skills or experience to make a difference. Just a desire to help your neighbors and be part of something positive in our community. Want to learn more, volunteer, or become a member? Visit ApexLions.org to learn more.
