225 Young Eyes, 6 Important Referrals: Apex Lions Bring KidSight USA to St. Mary Magdalene

By | October 9, 2026

Sometimes the most important thing a child learns at school is that they may not be seeing clearly. That’s why the Apex Lions Club recently returned to St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School in Apex for our third year of providing free children’s vision screenings through the Lions KidSight USA program.

And thanks to the success of our previous visits, this year’s effort was our biggest yet! We screened 225 students and identified 6 children who were referred for further vision evaluation. Those six referrals are an important reminder of why we do this work. Vision problems aren’t always obvious, especially in younger children who may not realize they’re seeing the world differently from everyone else.

KidSight USA is a nationwide Lions program dedicated to identifying potential vision problems in children as early as possible. Through the program, Lions clubs bring free vision screenings directly to schools, preschools, daycare centers, and community organizations. Using specialized, touchless vision screening equipment, trained volunteers can quickly check children for potential vision concerns, including risk factors for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and amblyopia, commonly called lazy eye. The process is quick, safe, and especially well suited for young children who may not yet be able to read an eye chart.

Children don’t always know when something is wrong with their vision. They may assume everyone sees the world exactly as they do. Undetected vision problems can affect reading, learning, classroom participation, and everyday activities. Some childhood vision conditions are also easier to treat when identified early. KidSight USA helps give families the information they need to pursue further evaluation when a potential concern is detected. Our first two years of KidSight screenings at St. Mary Magdalene were so successful that we expanded the program this year to reach even more children. Lion John Lynde screened students in:

  • Preschool 3
  • Preschool 4
  • First Grade
  • Third Grade
  • Fifth Grade

Including preschool students was especially meaningful because early childhood is such an important time for vision development. By bringing KidSight USA directly to the school, we’re making it easier for families to have their children’s vision screened without needing to schedule a separate screening appointment.

Of the 225 students screened, six were referred for a more comprehensive examination by an eye care professional. A screening referral doesn’t mean a child has a diagnosed vision problem. It simply means the screening identified something that deserves further evaluation. But that’s exactly why programs like KidSight USA exist. Those six referrals represent six opportunities for families to investigate a potential issue that might otherwise go unnoticed. And when it comes to children’s eyesight, early awareness can make an important difference.

Screening 225 students across five grade levels requires some serious coordination! We want to extend a special thank you to Nurse Wendy, who did an outstanding job organizing the classes, coordinating student participation, and keeping the entire process running smoothly and efficiently.
Partnerships like this succeed when schools and community organizations work together toward a common goal. We’re incredibly grateful to Nurse Wendy and the entire St. Mary Magdalene school community for welcoming us back for a third successful year.

For the Apex Lions Club, KidSight USA is a wonderful example of what community service looks like in action. Our Lions volunteers have the screening equipment, training, and enthusiasm to help identify potential vision problems in local children. Now we’d love to bring this free service to even more schools, preschools, and daycare centers in Apex and surrounding communities! If you’re a school administrator, preschool director, daycare operator, teacher, or parent who would like to see KidSight screenings offered at your school, we’d love to hear from you.
