At our most recent Apex Lions Club meeting, we had the pleasure of welcoming Shad Kuklewski, Executive Director of Calyx Senior Living in Apex, along with Kristen, their Marketing Director. Their enthusiasm was contagious as they shared an inside look at a brand new assisted living community that will soon open right here in Apex.

Calyx Senior Living is expanding its presence across North Carolina, with existing locations in Raleigh, Durham, and Fuquay-Varina. The Apex community will be their fourth location and will include both assisted living and a dedicated memory care unit.
One of the most helpful parts of the presentation was Shad’s explanation of the difference between assisted living and skilled nursing. Having spent much of his career in skilled nursing, he was able to clearly explain how the two differ.
Assisted living focuses on helping residents live their daily lives with the level of support they need. This can include assistance with dressing, bathing, medication management, and other day to day needs. The goal is to provide support while maintaining independence and quality of life.
Shad described the experience as being similar to living on a cruise ship. Residents can enjoy their day while knowing that whatever they need, help is readily available.
In addition to assisted living, the Apex location will feature a specialized memory care unit designed to support individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This area provides tailored care in a safe and engaging environment, ensuring that residents receive the attention and structure they need.

Calyx Senior Living is designed to be more than just a place to live. It is a vibrant and engaging community. Residents will have access to:
- Daily activities that include social, recreational, and family focused events
- Wellness programs that promote active living
- High quality dining experiences
- Comfortable and thoughtfully designed living spaces
Each resident receives a personalized care plan that is monitored and adjusted over time. The goal is to ensure that every individual feels supported, engaged, and fulfilled.
Calyx communities are intentionally designed to reflect and connect with the surrounding area. The Apex location will be part of the vibrant local community, with access to nearby restaurants, healthcare providers, and cultural attractions.
This local connection is something that aligns closely with the mission of the Apex Lions Club. We are always looking for ways to strengthen our community and support those in need.
We are especially excited to share that Shad will be joining the Apex Lions Club as a member. We look forward to working together and exploring opportunities to collaborate, including potentially hosting events at the new facility in the future.
It is partnerships like these that help us continue our mission of serving others, especially our visually impaired people, which we often refer to as VIP.
