Sometimes the best way to understand why Lions serve is to see the expression on someone’s face when that service makes a difference. Two members of the Apex Lions Club recently shared their personal experiences attending the North Carolina Lions Visually Impaired Persons (VIP) Fishing Tournament. Their message to fellow Lions was simple: this is one of those events where you get to witness the impact of Lions service firsthand.
Past District Governor Wayne Faber and past president Bill Lemon both talked about how special and encouraging it is to see the expressions on the faces of VIPs participating in the event. It is an experience that brings the Lions mission to life in a way that is difficult to capture in words.
More Than a Fishing Tournament
The NC Lions VIP Fishing Tournament brings visually impaired people together for an annual three-day event focused on educational, recreational and personal growth opportunities. The 2026 tournament will be held October 19-21. Learn more about the NC Lions VIP Fishing Tournament.
For our members who have attended in the past, the experience has provided a powerful reminder of what service can mean. Lions are not simply supporting a program from a distance. They have an opportunity to serve alongside VIPs, build relationships and see the joy the event creates.

An Opportunity to Serve
The tournament depends on people willing to give their time. The official tournament website says donations of time help continue the event for visually impaired people from North Carolina and beyond.
And there is still an opportunity to be part of the 2026 event.
Volunteer registration is due August 15, 2026. The tournament’s volunteer application lists many ways to help, from greeting and serving meals to preparing fishing equipment, assisting with pier registration, scoring and other event needs.
