“Do not hurt the future for our grandkids.”

That simple message was at the heart of Sue Langley’s recent presentation to the Apex Lions Club, “Practical Guide to Sustainability: People, Planet, Prosperity.”
Sue is a graduate of the School of Design at North Carolina State University and serves on the national board of directors for the American Sewing Guild. Through her work, she became increasingly aware of the environmental impact of how clothing and other everyday products are produced and discarded.
Her message was practical: protecting the planet starts with choices each of us can make. Sue shared simple ideas such as:
- Carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.
- Bike more and drive less when possible.
- Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
- Conserve water.
- Bring reusable shopping bags.
- Use energy efficient LED light bulbs.
- Plant a tree.
- Choose sustainable food options.
- Reduce the use of chemicals and consider natural cleaners.
- Keep learning about sustainability.
None of these actions requires one person to solve every environmental challenge. The goal is to make thoughtful choices that, over time, can add up across a community.
That idea fits naturally with Lions service. Whether we are supporting vision programs, recycling eyeglasses, helping local organizations, or learning how to better serve our community, progress often begins with people deciding to take one useful action.
Sue left us with a good question to consider: What is one small change you can make today that could help protect the future for the next generation?
We appreciate Sue Langley for sharing her knowledge and practical ideas with the Apex Lions Club.
