We sure had a lot going on at our first meeting of 2013! First we had the presentation of our 2012 Peace Poster Winners. The winners (pictured here) are: 1st place (top left) Lauren Chapman, 2nd place (top right) Megan Santos, and 3rd place (bottom) Erica Grace Mir-Perez. All three posters were very nicely done and exceptionally creative. Congratulations to the winners! After the presentations were made, Lion John Potts (world’s greatest tail twister) got a little creative as well. He managed to convince two of the dads to volunteer without knowing what they were in for. Crazy, right?! Well, then he let the artists have their fun with them in a competition for some gift cards. The results are pictured here as well. As you can see, the dads were very good sports! The competition resulted in a tie so everyone got a gift card. Nice! More pictures are linked here.
After that, we were honored to have Lion Bob Steep provided us with a program and present a video about Camp Dogwood. He also gave a very personal testimony about things he has seen and experienced over the years as he has served there. Camp Dogwood is a camp for VIPs (Visually Impaired People). It is a week long experience for them to experience a little independence and get assistance as needed so they can experience some things they don’t get to do any other time of year. They are encouraged to participate as much or as little as they want to – whatever makes them happy. It has been likened to a “stationary cruise” because it is like a vacation on a 65 acre facility with everything taken care of for the residents all week long. We sell raffle tickets to support the maintenance of the facilities so we can keep this special camp running. It makes a huge difference in the life of the folks that are fortunate enough to attend and is worth supporting and volunteering at! If you have never been there before, it is highly recommended that you go experience it for yourself as a volunteer if you can. More information can be found at the Camp Dogwood web site.
