We were thrilled to have Shawn Deaton speak at our last meeting where he shared his extensive knowledge and experience from his work at the Textile Protection and Comfort Center at North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles. Shawn began by reflecting on his personal connection to the community, thanking Kevin and others for their support in scouting, which played a crucial role in his children’s development into Eagle Scouts.

Shawn’s talk highlighted the cutting-edge research and innovations happening at the center, which has become a leader in studying protective clothing and comfort. He shared fascinating insights from projects that ranged from evaluating the effectiveness of different types of masks during the COVID-19 pandemic to the challenges of balancing safety and comfort in protective gear for firefighters. Shawn also discussed the center’s pioneering work in developing a fire suit that could protect against both flames and chemical warfare agents, a project initiated after 9/11.

Among the highlights of his talk was the discussion on the importance of human physiological testing in creating garments that are not only protective but also comfortable for long periods. Shawn emphasized that true innovation lies in striking the right balance between protection and comfort, a challenge that his team continues to tackle with cutting-edge research and technology.

We are grateful for Shawn’s insights and for sharing the incredible work being done at the Textile Protection and Comfort Center. His contributions to the field are making a significant impact on the safety and well-being of those who rely on protective clothing every day.
