This evening we were honored to host Kelly Johnson and a team from WakeMed Health & Hospitals Audiology for an insightful presentation on hearing loss and prevention. This session was not just informative but also highly engaging, leaving our members with practical knowledge on how to protect one of our most vital senses—our hearing.
Kelly came prepared with a wealth of information and resources. She shared handouts that detailed the causes of hearing loss, early signs to watch for, tips for prevention, and even crossword puzzles to take home. We were each provided with a set of earplugs to practice with on our own. This hands-on approach allowed our members to gain confidence in using ear protection, an essential tool in safeguarding our ears from harmful noise levels. She also attempted to share a video about how hearing works but it would not play so she provided the link instead so we could watch it later.
Our members were eager to learn, and the interaction with Kelly was lively and informative. Many questions were raised, ranging from the impact of daily noise exposure to the effectiveness of various hearing protection devices and some discussion about different kinds of hearing aids and their effectiveness.
The session highlighted the importance of early detection and prevention in maintaining healthy hearing throughout our lives. It was a reminder that hearing loss is not just an issue for the elderly—everyone, regardless of age, should take steps to protect their hearing.
We are grateful to Kelly Johnson and the WakeMed Audiology team for their time and expertise. Their visit was a valuable experience for our Lions Club, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in promoting health and wellness within our community.
