Caring for Young Eyes at St. Mary Magdalene

By | December 5, 2025

On Friday, December 5, 2025, the Apex Lions Club returned to St. Mary Magdalene School to provide a free vision screening for Preschool students, continuing a valued partnership focused on early childhood eye health.

This screening was conducted by Lion John Lynde, using the club’s child friendly vision screening equipment. In October, the Apex Lions Club screened students in grades 1, 3, and 5. This time, the focus shifted to the Preschool classes, helping ensure that even our youngest learners have the visual tools they need for success.

Why Preschool Vision Screening Matters

Good vision plays a critical role in early learning, social development, and confidence. Many vision issues are not obvious to parents or teachers, especially in very young children who may not realize that what they see is not normal. By offering vision screenings at school, the Apex Lions Club helps identify potential concerns early, when treatment is often most effective.

During this visit:

  • A total of 70 preschool children were screened.
  • Only 5 children were referred for a comprehensive eye examination.
  • The vast majority of students showed no signs of vision concerns.

These results are encouraging and demonstrate how preventive screenings can provide peace of mind for families while ensuring that children who need follow up care are identified early.

A Growing Partnership with St. Mary Magdalene

This screening builds on earlier efforts at St. Mary Magdalene School. The Apex Lions Club previously shared updates about screenings in October and also documented a similar event last year. Each visit strengthens our relationship with the school and reinforces our shared commitment to student well being.

As Lions, we place special emphasis on helping people who are blind or visually impaired, often referred to as VIP, which stands for Visually Impaired People. Programs like these school screenings are a key part of that mission, helping prevent vision problems before they become barriers to learning.

Serving Apex Through Vision and Service

The Apex Lions Club is proud to serve the Apex community through projects like free vision screenings, eyeglass collection, and support for local and statewide vision programs. These efforts are made possible by dedicated volunteers and community support.
