On Saturday, April 19th, Apex High School’s track was alive with energy, excitement, and a whole lot of fast feet. The Apex Lions Relays, a long-standing tradition in North Carolina track and field, returned once again—bigger and better than ever.
Since 1979, the Apex Lions Club has teamed up with the Apex High School Track & Field Team to host this celebrated relay meet, drawing high school athletes from across North Carolina and even neighboring states. Over the years, the event has grown into one of the largest track meets in the region, becoming a springtime highlight for student athletes and track fans alike.
What makes this event even more special is the heart behind it. The Apex Lions Club doesn’t just sponsor the event—they show up in full force. Members volunteer their time to fully staff the concession stand and handle the sale of the always-popular event T-shirts, which are designed by Apex High School students. The shirts have become must-have souvenirs for competitors aiming to set personal records (PRs) and commemorate their race-day achievements.
But the real magic? Every dollar earned from concessions and T-shirts goes straight to the Apex High Track & Field Team—not the general booster club. This tradition began because a few of the Apex Lions were once Apex High track athletes themselves. They wanted to give back in a meaningful, direct way—and they’ve been doing just that for over four decades.

This year’s Relays were nothing short of spectacular. The weather played its part perfectly—warm with a steady breeze, creating ideal conditions for runners to chase PRs and, in some cases, even state records. We’re hearing that a few North Carolina records might have fallen this year!

For the athletes, it’s not just another meet—it’s the meet. There’s a sense of pride, anticipation, and community that comes with competing at the Apex Lions Relays. From the roar of the crowd to the thrill of a well-run baton handoff, it’s a day that leaves a lasting mark.
Hats off to the Apex Lions Club, the Apex High Track & Field Team, and everyone who makes this event such a success. Here’s to keeping the tradition strong—and even faster—next year!
