Amateur Radio: A Lifeline In Emergencies

By | July 17, 2025

At our most recent Apex Lions Club meeting, our very own club treasurer, Richard Hall, took us on a fascinating journey through the history and modern-day uses of amateur (ham) radio. While the technology may be over a century old, it remains one of the most reliable ways to communicate when all else fails.

Richard explained how ham radio operators (often called “hams”) have long stepped up in times of disaster. He shared how, just last year, when Tropical Storm Helene tore through parts of North Carolina and knocked out nearly every form of communication, it was amateur radio that kept people connected. One lone repeater on Mt. Mitchell remained operational, enabling first responders and local hams to perform welfare checks and coordinate assistance for those in remote areas.

Beyond emergencies, ham radio is also a fun and rewarding hobby that can support public service events, provide technical learning opportunities, and foster connections around the world. Richard gave us a helpful rundown on FRS and GMRS radios (which require little to no licensing) and how licensed ham operators can do even more with more powerful equipment.

So why is this relevant to the Apex community? Because when disaster strikes or cell towers go down, it’s the people with radios and know-how who keep everyone else informed and safe. And that’s the kind of community resilience the Lions are proud to promote.

If you’re interested in emergency preparedness, technology, or just connecting with like-minded people, amateur radio might be a great place to start. And the Apex Lions Club is always looking for community-minded folks like you to join us. Come to a meeting, ask a question, and let’s keep Apex connected no matter what comes our way.
