Scholarships And Relay Races

By | June 10, 2012

2012 ScholarshipsAt our June 7th meeting we had two special events to celebrate.  The first was the success of the 2012 Relay Races at Apex High School and the second was the scholarships to be awarded to three outstanding students from Apex High School.  Athletic director Del Phillips gave us some statistics about the relay races.  In all, there were over 1000 participants from more than 50 high schools across the state.  Dell has been the athletic director at Apex for 8 years now and this was the best turnout he can recall.  The Apex Lions Club sponsors this event every year and also runs the concession stand for the day.  All proceedes from that effort are donated back to the Apex athletic department.  This year we donated $3300 which is the best that we can recall as well.

We also had the opportunity to present all three of this year’s scholarship award recipients with their checks and wish them well in their collegiate endeavors.  Pictured from left to right are Jason Li who will be attending Washington University in St. Louis, Alia Capone who will stay local and attend UNC Chapel Hill, and Matthew Lee who will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  Matthew was also the valedictorian of this year’s graduation class.  All three plan different pre-medicine paths and further education on way to becoming doctors or psychiatrists.  Congratulations to all three and we wish them tremendous success!
