At our October 16, 2025 meeting, the Apex Lions Club welcomed Lynne Zajac, Founder and Owner of Optimal AccessAbility. Lynne shared her insights on how to make homes safer and more supportive for older adults and people with mobility challenges. Her presentation offered valuable information for anyone planning for the future or helping loved ones maintain their independence.

Lynne explained that while most people focus on financial planning for retirement, few consider the risks that threaten independence. Falls are one of the biggest of those risks. One in four people over age 65 will experience a fall each year, and 88 percent of those who are seriously injured never fully recover. With the cost of assisted living and in-home care rising, safety in the home becomes more than a comfort issue it is a financial and quality-of-life priority.
Her company, Optimal AccessAbility, provides non-medical consultations for home safety and accessibility throughout the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill area. Lynne demonstrated the customized software she uses to assess each home and create detailed reports that identify risks and suggest improvements. She also connects clients with reliable contractors and can even manage projects to make homes safer and more accessible.
Some of her practical “Tips and Tricks” included:
- Use a small table or shelf on your front porch for package deliveries so you do not have to bend over to pick up boxes.
- Keep pathways clear and move frequently used items to waist level.
- Make sure doors, hallways, and walkways are at least 32 to 36 inches wide for wheelchair access.
Lynne also discussed the “Silver Tsunami,” the coming demographic shift where the number of people over 65 will outnumber those under 18. Only about 4 percent of homes in the United States are currently accessible, which means demand for safe and accessible housing will grow dramatically in the years ahead. Making your home safer today can help prevent accidents and increase its value in the future.
The Apex Lions Club thanks Lynne Zajac for her informative presentation and her commitment to helping people live safely and independently.
