“Our Roots Are In Apex”

By | January 16, 2025

That is the clever tagline for the Apex Gardening Club. This evening our guest speaker was Sandra Gudenkauf and she shared some history, stories and lots of photos from the club. Sandra used the events of a typical year in the club to share the things they do and sprinkled in some stories about members and her own life experiences as well.

Throughout the year they have various speakers on a number ot topics around plant propagation, growing plants, bees (pollinators), and other gardening related subjects. In October they have a plant exchange amongst the members. In December there is a Christmas party, of course! January begins the winter seeding activities using milk jugs or restaurant clamshells. In April the plant sale takes place over two weekends at the Farmers Market. This is their primary fundraiser where they sell over 3,000 plants!

The best part may be that the funds go to support several beneficiaries including: Grants to Apex schools for gardening projects, Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and Book Bag Buddies amongst others. There might even be a possibility of teaming up with the Apex Lions Club for an event in the future – to be determined.

The year ends with an annual luncheon, new member greet and planning session for next year.

We also learned that the Apex Depot Garden and Planters are maintained by the Apex Garden Club! And the birdhouse was hand made by one of the club members, too.

They are a relatively small but fun group of between 10-20 people and the dues are only $25 / year. If you want to learn more about the Apex Garden Club you can find them online at ApexGardenClub.com
