2013-09-05-Randall-Heath-EMSIn the first of our meetings this month we had over a dozen guests visit the club to learn a little bit more about what we are all about. We also had a couple of Lions from Cary prowl this evening. Lion Horace shared some of the history of the International Association Of Lions Clubs as well as the Apex Lions Club. You can read more about our history at this link. Lions Clubs do many things to make our community better.

We also heard from Randall Heath the new Apex EMS Chief who started in May of this past year after the retirement of Nikki Winstead. Randall’s original plan was to become an educator but that all changed one summer when he was working as a lifeguard and someone asked him if he was an EMT. After inquiring with the local community college, he was so interested in the field that he started working at the age of 17. When he was 18 he was tested by the state and was finally able to start his career officially. Having worked in the field for 24 years now he has become the chief in Apex. Previously he had been working at Wake Med since 2006. While at Wake Med Randall helped start their critical care special service unit and the helicopter unit.  The Apex EMS was started as an all volunteer organization back in 1971 and became the first paramedic organization in Wake County. Randall is excited to announce that they are restarting a volunteer program which will start small and focus mainly on EMT to start but will grow over time. He hopes to find others who share his passion for the field and who will start the same way he did – as a volunteer 24 years ago.
